Every year in the North Pacific another 7,000 kilometers of drift net were lost, but they continue catching fish and entangling diving birds. One survey indicated that off Newfoundland 100,000 birds and mammals were killed this way in only four years, and this estimate took no account of those that had been filched from the nets by predators or had simply decayed and fallen out.

Recently, a neighbor gave me a lovely garden plant. She called it a mirror bush, as it had dark super-glossy leaves, but there was no reference to mirrors in its Latin name, Coprosma, which means 'shit-smelling'. I am anxiously waiting for it to come into flower.
