To my surprise, the film was quite accurate. The book tells a lot of early stories about McCandless: his childhood, his talents, his persistence, the lack of respect for authority and all this other great stuff that didn't appear in the film, but that's only natural in movie adaptation - parts has to be discarded.
What bothered me was that Penn has created his own McCandless. His McCandless was described as a perfect god-like hero, charming all who came into his presence - not showing his ugly sides.

But overall, they managed to adapt the main parts very well. The tone is different, but the facts are more or less the same.
