I'm not sure - did the Bow Street Runners actually HAVE ranks like "Inspector", or did that come with the rise of the Metropolitan Police Force in 1829, almost a decade after the events of this book?

Problem here it feels like the author can't decide if she wants to adhere to the (frankly hypocritical) rules of Upper-Class Regency England, where a woman marrying several steps below her station would affect not only her, but their children's chances in Society as well - or if she wants a more modern reading where class matters but not as much....
