I'm absolutely smitten with this book thus far--Harris paints the public whipping of proud Marianne so finely and lets us into her personal horror and later, trauma, in a way that I have seldom seen in period romance...in hands of many others in the genre, the whipping would have come off as comic book-like. So far Marianne's journey reminds me of the arcs of heroines in my favorite Victorian sensation novels...love!
