In this book the main character is the outcast. Beatrix Farrand is a trail blazer, as she is one of the first female landscape designers in America. However, many people do not support her decision, as a result of the traditional view that women are supposed to be a caretaker and nothing more. But Beatrix loves horticulture, and it determined to pursue it, despite being looked down upon by others in the story.
