This "book" is actually the first 3 books about PERN. I'm also reading "All the Weyrs of PERN which came out years later. The agrarian PERN population finds the technology left by their ancestors. The computer teaches them enough to rid them of the threat of Thread. This 4th book fill a great gap in the narrative.
