Let me say I agree 100%, and I saw this when I was a child. (Though I never formed much attachment to it.) Particularly on existence and degree of SS and how Gaston was inserted there so Beast would be seen as "better" choice. (Not sure how familiar you are with original fairy tale, but there was no "bad guy" beside the Beast and Beast was much more abusive. But of course Disney had to "fix it" the best it could.)

About SS and "hostage" vs. "legitimate prisoner" though...I think the document you quoted is geared towards hostage situations, so it uses such terminology. After all, what goes on in "legitimate" prisons is rarely discussed outside - and no one can go and say "legitimate prisoners" should fight to get out. But since studies link the syndrome to archaic practice of kidnapping people and integrating them into your tribe, I daresay it should, in theory, extend to all kinds of captivity regardless of legality.

As for "I gave her a library"...no. He gave her access to a library that was already there.

Yep, you're right about the legit prisoner thing. It's an odd situation. I haven't read the original fairy tale in years, either. In fact, I don't think I've ever read it. Odd. I must go read it now.

And, yeah, he didn't really give her a library... I was lied to by the memes. Damn the memes.
