The illustrations are exactly as they should be for the tone of the book. This children's book does not talk down to kids but introduces new ideas and new words. It breaks down gender stereotypes and has an african american main character without talking about that fact that he is african american. You must read with excitement, contentment, urgency, boldness, or anything the text calls for.
