I started reading this last night but barely got into it because it is so fucking cold in my house because heat pumps are actual shit and I had to hide under my mountain of blankets and thought about putting both dogs in bed with my husband and I. How do people up north handle this shit? It is barely below freezing here and I hate everybody and everything that reminds me of warmth.

Eric Plume I found myself liking this one despite how stories like this aren't usually my thing at all...I'll be curious to see what you think.

I'm enjoying it so far but I think my brain is a little fried at the moment so I am not fully absorbing it if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I feel you...especially the part about the cold from your previous update. I live in Northwest Washington and right now we're having Snowpocalypse 2019; my work is closed, its about 10 degrees colder than it normally is and we've had winds strong enough to damage my roof.

Anyhow, I hope your brain clears up enough to fully enjoy this book, I had fun with it when I read it despite the subject matter usually not being my cuppa.

My version of cold and your version are two very different things.

It's 47 and raining here and it is making my arthritis act up.

I hope my brain starts working right too. I'm not sure if it ever has in the past but we will hope for the best.

LOL you have a point! I forgot you were in the South.

...although, in my experience "40s and raining" is way more miserable weather than "20s and snowing" to be out in. With the second, you just layer on enough clothes and you're fine. With the first, you simply cannot stay warm no matter what you're wearing. First you get wet, then you get cold, and there's nothing to be done about it. Even rain gear doesn't help; the moisture in the air builds up inside the rain gear and eventually makes your clothes wet.

My sympathies about the arthritis, that has to be miserable in the cold damp. :(

It sucks, especially considering I'm not even 30! The key is to keep moving.

Eric Plume Aw man, that IS lame!

Does staying warm also help? Because if so they make electric heating pads for a bed; we have one on ours and when combined with polar-fleece sheets and a thick quilt (not to mention to big fluffy cats), its basically "maximum coziness, ACTIVATE!"

The pad even has separate controls for each side, so if you have a sleeping partner with different temp needs you can each dial it in to your specification. One of the best purchases we ever made.

It does help to a certain extent but there is the combo issue of inflammation with some of my joints. I have a heating pad and an ugg comforter that helps a LOT during winter months but it is always funny to have a heating pad on my back and an ice pack on my knee.

Eric Plume Yeah, believe it or not I know that one. My fiancee was in a nasty car wreck last April that left her bedridden for months; among other things she broke her pelvis in six places. Due to inactivity she was often cold (its why we bought the heating pad), but thanks to inflammation and nerve pain brought on by the pelvic brace she often needed an ice pack for her hip.

Like I said, my sympathies...joint pain is no joke. :(

Brittain *Needs a Nap and a Drink* Oh I hate to hear that! So the thing that works the best for me (but it is stupid expensive and you need a prescription) is the Game Ready system of compression and ice therapy. Physical therapists often use them but they really really help get swelling down.

Yeah, I use ice packs a lot to moderate the minor strains and sprains that go along with being a trades-person; I lift heavy timbers a lot and usually have a sore something (usually shoulder or knee). Ice pack + 2 advil + a couple of cold beers usually does the trick, lol. :)
