Teen contemporary fantasy not full of whining and angst and pining for vampires? Yes.

Ends as definitely the first in a series; characters divided, action taking place in the sky, but somehow just a little resolved also. Kelly is quite smart -- thinks in 3D and around over and through. Dont quite understand how the magic "works" or what makes one Mage better or worse than another -- even a beginner. But maybe there is no such "system"? Hm...

Starts in Chicago 1871 as the great fire breaks out. Forward to modern day downtown Dubuque, a black teen girl from Chicago, a mysterious old homeless man, and a strange bookstore. Narration is good but recording has a few issues which plosives (p, b, t) and at times variations in volume (moving closer and further from the mic) and a few mic stand adjustments here and there. But gets stronger with every chapter.
