It's a page turner and the research behind it is really impressive; they talked to everyone (that was still alive in the late 80s/early 90s). You basically have be down with the whole oral history thing of people constantly getting the facts messed up and shit-talking each other a lot. For that reason it's not a perfect intro to the subject but it gave me personally a sense of continuity between people and bands I'd mostly thought of as isolated from one another. And it gets at that sense of actually living through it, which is pretty exceptional in more standard histories. About 75-80% of the people in it come off as totally insufferable. You also have to put up with reading a TON about drug use, which can be enervating. I picked it up cheap and found it worth the read, and you'll know within a couple chapters whether it's your bag or no.
