Romance authors, please do not include a dog in your stories as an adorable plotfloof only to ignore it later in the story. Because as your H and h are banging their way through to an HEA, I’m frantically dialing the SPCA for fictional-character abuse.

(This may apply to a book I’m reading now and otherwise enjoying but that will lose a star for dog neglect.)

Cyndi That bothers me too! The animals magically disappear or care for themselves. Sometimes that happens to kids in books too!

Kara It’s so annoying! I will constantly fixate on the poor dog, waiting by the door to go potty while the MCs are screwing their way around the house. Just commit to your secondary characters, even if they lick their own balls!

Cyndi Exactly!

Leo (Queen of the Rants and Spoilers) I agree Kara, I recently read one where the heroine was frequently forgetting to feed or take her dog out for a walk. I spent the whole book talking to myself saying “woman, you forgot to take the dog for a walk” it bothered me a lot! I couldn’t enjoy it. I hate when the animals are being neglected in books. That’s an automatic low rating from me. It doesn’t matter if the book is safe or not.

Kara Ugh, so irritating! Why have the animal in the story if you're just going to ignore it?! What's the point even? And I'm with you 100% Leo - I will spend the entire rest of the book going, "Where's the fucking dog, lady? Did you walk her? Did you rub her belly? Worst. Owner. Ever."
