When I first got out west, I lived in the woods for a year. I learned fast: an animal sees or smells you before you can mark it, you go hungry. Soon enough, they never saw me, never heard me, never smelled my scent. Not until I had them at the end of the knife, between my hands. Wherever I wanted them. This is what you learn.

They were going to call me Victory. Daddy was in the 101st Airborne. Fought in the Battle of Normandy. Mama was just three months pregnant with me when she heard it on the radio. The invasion was a success. The war was ours to win. Mama wrote Daddy a letter: Let's name our baby Victory. She will grow up in the warmth of our love. We will teach her that anything is possible.
