Wow this book is HEARTWRENCHING.

Reading it as an adult is a completely different experience.

I feel like the previous quote emphasizes my point exactly... and you're fooling yourself if you think there aren't people today who possess Scarlett O'Hara's ignorance

"She glanced at Peter and saw that a tear was trickling down his
nose. Instantly a passion of tenderness, of grief for his
humiliation swamped her, made her eyes sting. It was as though
someone had been senselessly brutal to a child. Those women had
hurt Uncle Peter--Peter who had been through the Mexican War ... Peter who had held his master in his arms
when he died... And they said they wouldn't trust
n******!"

A little older and a little wiser this time around, and I still find this book a fascinating study in racism. It comes in all subtle shapes and forms, and not always the way you'd expect. I feel like GWTW is especially important to be (critically) reading in this day and age.

This is a fascinating book, if only for the fact that it is told through the eyes of a highly flawed character
