Simon Magus was apparently a Gnostic prophet and so was Menander. I find it qutie fascinating how much Gnosticism borrowed from ancient Judaism(on the one hand) and ancient Platonism(on the other hand). The early Christian heresiologists have given us plenty of reliable info about ancient Gnosticism and It's various adherents(for the most part)

The chapter on Thomas Christianity is without a doubt one of my most favorite chapters although he's WAY too kind to the last saying in the apocryphal Gospel of Thomas(which has an negative view of women). I wish that mention was made of the fact that Indian Christians(especially the so-called "Thomas" Christians of south India) today hold that the apostle Judas Thomas was the founder of the Indian church.
