I'm kind of wondering why would Hermione want to become friends with Harry and Ron considering how mean and rude they were towards her. I feel like she could do better. Harry and Ron, on the other hand, would die horrific and painful death without her, without a doubt.

I love how Dumbledore couldn't even be bothered to come in and explain things to Dursleys in person, he just left Harry on the doorstep for the night. What if he got pneumonia? What if he was stolen? What if a rabid raccoon bit him? Dumbledore should consider himself lucky Harry survived that night.

The thing is that she needed friends and I think she was smart enough to know that girls can be real *peep* whereas boys say stuff, then drink (butter-)bear together as if nothing ever happened. And let's face it: I bet people have said worse things than what Ron had said!

This just shows how poor the friendship options were at Hogwarts, when Harry and Ron were the best options :D Wouldn't it be funny if Harry and Ron being mean to her would lead Hermione to "join the dark side" and join Voldemort instead? I can totally imagine her telling him "it's Avada KeDAvra, not Avada Kedavraa"
I didn't either, but after re-reading it... They weren't the nicest, they kept telling her to leave them alone and to go away and Ron was making fun of her. It might be my ego speaking, but I don't think I would want to be friends with people who treat me that way. I know I'm taking it way too seriously xD That's why I said in my review of the book that I'm becoming too old and too cynical to re-read the early HP books.
Well, if you want someone to go away because you don't know they are a great person, how else would you say it?! I think this is a typical example for people nitpicking. There is actual mobbing (yes, also in Hogwarts) but this wasn't that.
I'm sorry Trish, but isn't that what reviews are? People sharing their opinions and, yes, nitpicking on things they like and dislike? And where did I use the work mobbing? I think that there is a whole range of things between "mobbing" and "being worthy of someone's friendship". I thought my update was pretty light and I honestly don't know why it turned into this serious exchange of opinions.

I think that there is a w..."the word mobbing is implied when you talk about kids being mean to another kid beyond what you perceive as acceptable. And I don't mind you expressing your opinion, far from it, but this translates directly into the "real world" (how I hate that expression, as if books weren't "real") - if you think that's tough, you will not like what's going on in schools ever. *lol*
Moreover, what is wrong with a serious exchange of opinions?

I think that ..."Hah, I actually wasn't taking it seriously at all, but when I stop to think about it, I just find it strange that despite the fact that Ron and Harry were ignoring Hermione for months and telling her to go away, she would still want to be friend friends with them.
I love HP books and I always will, but like I said, I think I'm outgrowing them, at least the first few of them. I find a lot of things to be nonsensical and to not really make sense (just to mention some: Dumbledore dropping Harry off on the Dursleys' porch and leaving him there in cold by himself all night; Dursleys forcing Harry to sleep under the stairs when they had not one, but two spare bedrooms; Filch working at Hogwarts even though all his work could have been accomplished much much easier by wizards and so on :D )
Well, the Dursleys were horrible people so of course they didn't want to make Harry feel welcome and give up one of their spare rooms. And remind me because I really don't know anymore but is it mentioned that Harry was waiting "all night in the cold" on the doorstep? I always pictured him being left there, Dumbledore ringing a magical bell upon vanishing. Filch I have no excuse for (but he is a cat owner so ...).
Trish wrote: "Well, the Dursleys were horrible people so of course they didn't want to make Harry feel welcome and give up one of their spare rooms. And remind me because I really don't know anymore but is it me..."Well, it says:
"Good luck, Harry," Dumbledore murmured. He turned on his heel and with a swish of his cloak, he was gone.
A breeze ruffled the neat hedges of Privet Drive, which lay silent and tidy under the inky sky, the very last place you would expect astonishing things to happen. Harry Potter rolled over inside his blankets without waking up. One small hand closed on the letter beside him and he slept on, not knowing he was special, not knowing he was famous, not knowing he would be woken in a few hours' time by Mrs. Dursley's scream as she opened the front door to put out the milk bottles.
Sure sounds like he was there by himself all night, because Dumbledore walked away by then and since it there was "inky sky", it had to be middle of the night.
Also, I know I'm going way too deep. I'm not taking the books this seriously, don't worry :D These thoughts are just now occurring to me. So: Since Harry was with the Dursleys since he was a little baby, it means that Petunia had to take care of him, feed him, clothe him, teach him how to walk and talk.... How the hell does one not build some kind of feelings towards a child that way? I mean, I'm certainly not a kid person, but hell if I brought a baby up, I couldn't let it sleep under the stairs later... (Haha, I'm sure Rowling never thought this deeply about this xD)
OK " a few hours". That is rather peculiar. On the other hand, I'm sure he was safe. If only thanks to that "neighbour". ;) As for the bond, there have been some seriously interesting experiments to see the baby's development as well as that of the people caring for it. You'd be surprised.
