One thing that I am very curious about at this point in the book is how this neighborhood came to be. How is it that everyone in the world would agree to ignore this town’s existence, and to let the people residing there live an isolated life, spending their days in obliviousness? And what is going on in the world around them? Is the outside world corrupt? These are my curiosities at this point in the book.

In The Giver, Jonas was selected to become the next receiver. He was picked because of his unique character traits. Jonas is described as being extremely competent, as well as curious about the world around him. He is very thoughtful, as is everyone in the society. Jonas could also be described as prudent, but this air of cautiousness that he has can turn calculated decisions into apprehensive situations as well.

The inticing incident in this book is when the father is telling Jonas about the day that he received his role in society. As he is explaining his own experiences, Jonas begins to have thoughts about the receiver, perhaps the most elusive member of society. This could be some very subtle foreshadowing for what role Jonas will be selected for and what will happen while he is in this position.
