So far a family of three is going to move into a hotel to be the winter caretakers. We've learned a little about the hotel (that many people have died there) and about the family moving in (that the dad has a drinking problem and anger issues & the little boy can read minds.)

We now know that Danny knows what his parents are thinking and feeling, even if he doesn't quite understand what it is. We also know that the things at the Overlook are becoming more sinister as winter starts to come.

So far Jack has found a scrap book that contains the entire history of the hotel through news paper articles. As he learns how the hotel was started, he also learns some dark things that have happened there.

We learn the the chef of the Overlook has the same mind reading powers as Danny, and that he calls it "The shining." Except, Danny seems to have an even more powerful type of the shinning then any one else the chef has ever met.
