Into the home stretch, and the plot is starting to make sense. I've come to believe that this is a book exploring change, especially political, in a world struggling with a changing understanding of gender identity. Now that I've caught onto that, there are parallels to Dune by Frank Herbert.
Nice that the author leads us to understand the changes' effects on people, instead of pushing a gender-politics stance.
