I think that the author is very grim and ominous about the characters taking their trip to Egypt. She has clearly hinted to things such as the trip becoming a matter of life and death, and one that will involve sinister actions. Even some of the characters in the book have mentioned things such as having to worry about unpleasantness on their voyage. All of these things sound very gloomy to me.
