When Katniss and her team is in the underground system under the Capitol, evil is chasing them. President Snow sent Mutts to chase them underground. After resting, Katniss wakes up hearing the Mutts hissing. They are then chased by the Mutts and 4 or 5 people die because of them. The author used the symbolism of underground to add more tension to the book. Tension was built up underground, making it more suspenseful.

I found the tone very serious and grim. In the other Hunger Games books, the tone is more hopeful, but now there are a lot of deaths and the tone has worsened. I can tell the tone when Suzanne Collins describes the deaths and Katniss’s feelings. The author makes the deaths very gruesome and gives Katniss a very negative attitude. Katniss also blames herself for everyone’s death, giving the book a serious tone.

I think that in Mockingjay, Katniss is audacious. She is willing to take extreme risks to kill President Snow. For example, she was willing to turn herself in for just the slightest chance. She thought that maybe the president would have a public execution where Gale would be able to shoot him. Even though there were so many ways that she would die without President Snow dying, she was still willing to take the risk.

I wonder what Suzanne Collins thinks the symbolism behind the mockingjay is. I’m thinking that it might be that it was a fault of the Capitol that mockingjays were made and also a fault that they gave Katniss so much power when she won the games. Maybe because of the power that the victors are given, they are able to fight the Capitol. Just because they have this superiority, they don’t immediately like the Capitol.

In Mockingjay, I think that the inciting incident is when Katniss agrees to be the mockingjay. Without this, there would be no big connected fight against the Capitol. The people in the districts would not know that Katniss survived and the Capitol would have an easy way to win the war and continue their rule by destroying district 12 as punishment.
