The structure is problem and solution. Hatchet’s structure is problem and solution because Brian runs into many bumps or problems and has to think of ways to get around to solve them. Another reason why this is a problem and solution is because when Brian’s plane crashed he had to survive with the little resources that he had.

The minor character is Brian’s father. Brian’s father, a divorced man who lives in canada, wants to see his son. The only problem is that Brian’s mom lives in New York City. The author specifically chooses these locations because there would more possible challenges the family could overcome on Brian’s journey. The dad is not a distraction because he is concerned and wants to save his son every chance he gets.

The Archetypal Symbol in Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is wilderness/forest. It is this because when Brian crash lands in the forest, he has to thrive and survive for himself. Brian has to break the rules and be a little selfish to get supplies and food.
