I have just realized that Lynes is actually quite a sophisticated historian. When I started reading this, I thought I was going to find a naive artifact of its time (the early fifties), but I was mostly wrong: he understands quite well the heterogenous forces that shape our culture: from technological advances to grassroots organizations and commercial ventures, and he understands that the domestic is also social.
