The way that this novel is structured is by switching between the point of views of the two protagonists. It is also written chronologically, with the events playing out in a sequence based around the time that passes in the book. This works to the author’s advantage because she has the opportunities to incorporate quite a bit of detail and planning into how Kit and David’s relationship develops over time.

A minor character in this book that I think is important to the story is Miney, David’s sister. I think she is important because she acts as a mentor to David, helping him identify who he can trust and helping him add to his journal. She is important because she is one of the forces that drives the two central characters together, and as a consequence, David opens up to new friends and even love.
