Ok the tale of beren and luthien is objectively not a fun happy story (several people die, sauron is having a great time being awful etc etc) but they at least get to grow old and die together, and that's sunshine and rainbows compared to what's going to happen next

chapters 20-23 are so gut-wrenching, goddammit JRRT. things will get better soon, I kept telling myself. After the most disastrous battle in middle earth history, the fall of 3 whole-ass Elven kingdoms, and the ruin of the houses of Men, the bar was very low. but it did get better.
