Not what I expected. A well written historical, leaning much more towards romance than mystery than I’m used to from JL. In fact, the mystery element was more... could they get away with a crime than a who-dun-it. The romance was interesting — lots of grey areas — but my biggest complaint is that there isn’t a HEA. These two are still at war, with people dying everyday. I wanted an epilogue of them home safe

I liked this for what it was. I’m not going to be jumping to reread it any time soon, but it was well written and a page turner. It’s definitely quite somber in tone, due to the war setting. I think I would have enjoyed this more if there was more time for the characters to breathe and do more than just hook up or fly planes, basically. By the end, the characters weren’t flat, but I didn’t feel as if I knew them

I always have a hard time buying into a romance when one of the characters is still grieving for a lost partner. In this case, it’s extra dubious, since Bat’s significant other died TWO DAYS AGO.
