When I decided to start reading The Great Gatsby before finishing the last two pages of The Liveliest Art I didn't expect to almost be done with the former book before I read that small part of the index that was left unread. So I just decided to read that index after updating Goodreads for what I read in The Great Gatsby today. Done finally. Good introduction to film that stops a decade + before the auteur comes in.

Updating late (again). This page count is for 5/16/2019. Noticed that 1959 is the newest film listed so far. You can count on one hand the amount of movies released after 1956. This guy probably barely thought of Stanley Kubrick who is now talked about as the old guard of Hollywood auteur filmmaking.

The way this author talks about the advent of widescreens in the '50s sounds comparable to the way we talk about 3D which is still with us a decade after the premiere of Avatar.
