Matthews is British and it really shows as you read this book. It's set in Louisiana, United States, but the language used isn't completely American. At first I went with it because the main character was born in Scotland and lived in France for many years. However, when other characters who have lived in Louisiana all their lives say "in hospital" or "keen" I get frustrated.
