This book has too much potential for its own good. So many fascinating ideas (a secret conspiracy preserving Roman civilization? homogeneous humanoid alien colonies incapable of traversing space? a quasi-Lovecraftian alien species that exists only to devour? time-bending spatial portals? etc.) but the author doesn't focus on ANY of them! They're just background noise. Mainly this is bog-standard military sci-fi.
