I’ve been living vicariously through books these past weeks, so when I don’t like a story I tend to take it rather personally :))

But boy, don’t I hate reading slumps?!

Acordul Fin Same. When I hit a bad reading spell it gets me in such a mood. I hope you find a good one soon. Fingers crossed :D!

Ari I don’t know. I’ve been re-reading for a while now, as every new book I start seems to disagree with all the raving reviews I see from other people *sigh* I am waiting for my mood to improve, maybe one of these days I will find that perfect book... maybe :)

Acordul Fin Oh, yes, the hype can be very deceiving, many times. #whythehype

When I'm not sure what to choose next what I do (sometimes) is that I pick a random pile of books and I read a few chapters of each, until I get a sense of the atmosphere and the writing style.

I got inspired by the "Try a chapter tag" on Youtube and it has worked for me somehow. I've found a few gems like Grafitti Moon by Cath Crowley, The Sunlight Pilgrims by Jenni Fagan, Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. I had them on my shelf for ages but I never felt inclined to read them. Until I tried this experiment. When I got to them I couldn't put them down. I've been trying this with the books on my Kindle as well.

I don't feel like doing this all the time, but, overall, it has contributed to keeping my reading going when I'm stuck. Since I went back to school two years ago I've been more or less in a reading slump. Or maybe I'm just getting old and I'm redefining my reading tastes, who knows.

One thing though, I used to feel compelled to finish a book after I started it even if it made me miserable. Now I dnf a lot. I even created a special shelf for that. Sometimes I'll push myself to finish a book even if it's not great but sometimes I just know from the very beginning that it won't work. Life is too short to waste on books that just won't do.

And sometimes I just embrace the reading slump and I do other things like binge watch TV shows and Youtube videos.

Sorry for the essay :D, I hope you have a lovely day!

Ari Well, this chapter thingy might be the right approach at this point.

Because reading 20% or 50% (like I've been doing so far) and then giving up, as I feel like I'm having enough already, only makes more angry and my reading slump is getting more pronounced with each attempt.
So I will definitely try it. I won't even hold it against you when the authors write amazing first chapters and then all goes down from there :))))

And I feel the same, that life is too short for crappy books.
And my tastes have probably changed as well and I'm looking in the wrong place.
I also blame it on those few absolutely incredible authors that set the expectations sky high for my future reading experience (*cough* Marchetta *cough* as fantasy will never be the same for me, the entire genre is now in ruins *sigh*).

Grafitti Moon is indeed a cutie pie. I also enjoyed Words in Deep Blue from Cath Crowley.
In general I tend to feel that in Australia the quality of the books might be higher. Maybe I'm wrong, of course, but some of my favourite authors happen to be from there.

PS: I watched the first episode in the tv series "You" last night. Though I gave up on the book, as it wasn't working for me at that moment, I enjoyed the ecranisation so far. Will see how that goes... And maybe I'll even finish the book, as I adore the romanian cover.

Acordul Fin I've had the same experience with Australian YA, I don't think it's a coincidence, it's just that good.

I had a great time reading "You" but I have to be honest, it's pretty messed up. I can't usually stomach things like that but I found Kepne's writing very addicting. If you're enjoying the show just go for it. Not sure if it's worth to force yourself to finish the book if it wasn't working for you.

I hope the chapter experiment pans out!
