I'm not loving the writing in this and then came "to where"....as in, "falling from the trees to where they became food for the animals." Yes, that's how we speak, fine if it's in dialogue, but NO in description. Rewrite the sentence in editing, please. "Falling from the trees to become food" works.

Also, if you have to keep justifying the premise, maybe it's a stretch.
