Sarah Boyle is a vivacious and witty young wife and mother, educated at a fine Eastern college, proud of her growing family which keeps her happy and busy around the house, involved in many hobbies and community activities, and only occasionally given to obsessions concerning Time/Entropy/Chaos and Death.
I can see why the title story is a classic, though I wouldn't really classify it as science fiction.

"Sheep" is one of the stranger pieces of fiction I've ever read - in a collection of very strange fiction. An 80-page novella in fragments, most of them about sheep (counting sheep, facts about sheep, sheep recipes, nursery rhymes about sheep) or dreams (the biology of dreams, interpreting dreams) - and yes, it's all very dream-like. But 80 pages of this? I don't know, Ms. Zoline. That's asking a lot of your readers.

"The Holland of the Mind" is based around a very simple metaphor, but the execution is stunning.
He had discovered what we know and do not believe, that he was breakable, and that the dykes made only an uneasy peace with the water and that, in the end, the water is bigger and can wait longer for victory.
