Just finished Benaway's short story, "Mountain God." Barring some unfortunate typos in the first printing, the story does excellent work of creating a fantasy empire that actively upends cultures through assimilationist policies and restrictive mobility. Aoyas and her partner Rais offer a window into this world that is critical of imperialism's injustices while also seeking to understand where they truly belong.
