Ward seemed far less concerned about such thoughts than Nick, even though he was a more obvious mark in his elegant, expensive clothes. He strolled along with his arms swinging by his sides, seeming relaxed and at ease, practically inviting pickpockets, but Nick made up for his insouciance by glaring at anyone suspicious looking who got too close.

I read it through this time without Ward’s journal entries, and aside from not remembering all that much about his twin, George, I don’t think I missed much. The first half of the book still drags a bit but the second half had a bit more emotional oomf without a journal interrupting almost every chapter transition.

I’m skipping over the scientific journal chapter prefaces this time around, but I’m still feeling oddly detached from the story. I can’t quite put my finger on what’s missing

Somehow I forgot that this starts off with Nick mistakenly thinking Ward is blackmailing him because he’s gay. And Ward goes along with that misassumption in order to get what he wants. (Which, really, makes it actual blackmail). Nrgh.

I could do without Ward's journal entries prefacing each chapter. Thus far, they just disrupt the narrative and don't add any depth to his character; they don't add anything to the story.
