In looking for a Steinbeck book on my library app I stumbled across this. What an amazing background he came from! Born in Romania and to a very domineering mother he escapes fascist Italy to go to the US to avoid the camps. What an incredible journey

The problem with reading books about your heroes is they often get knocked down from the plinth you’ve put them on. Steinberg loved drawing men on horses on pedestals so perhaps it’s fitting. Artists are human and when we learn of their shortcomings it’s a bit sad.

This man has led the most unbelievable life! I’ve always loved his work and to read about how he ended up all over the world in such an odd piece meal sort of way is fascinating.
