I had limited knowledge of the 54th prior to reading this book. It is wonderful to read more about the regiment and get a broader understanding of African Americans role in the fighting. it was appropriately sized but still rather dull in terms of writing style for young people. still excerpts of this book would be useful in a classroom setting.
