The history of recurrent conflict between shifting alliances of Greeks, Etruscans, Carthaginians, Gauls, and Romans in the broader Mediterranean, although it did nor have a direct impact on the native societies of southern France until the late second century BCE, did affect the fortunes, interests, and power of the colonial agents who operated in the region.
