Pynchon's histories have always felt not so much alternate as more broadly, but also more subtly, askew, w/ lines of perspective that verge following different optical physics - here, it seems to me, more pointedly than anywhere else, complete w/ a half-offered 'explanation' for the skew, most obv in these few pages here, following Basnight's 'transportation'

these last few pages, weirdly, feel both - BOTH - interminable AND rushed, as if maybe Pynchon were, after all, forcing a much much longer story to finally, impossibly, come to some kind of end.

one problem i'm having w/ this book is that, so far, for all its world-spanning-expansiveness-thing it feels very much restricted to/by being specifically about America; for such a capacious text it feels weirdly culturally claustrophobic/narrow-sighted.

finding myself having to backtrack a lot now; still a fun enough read to escape the label chore but it's certainly coming close to feeling like one. this 'big read' is, not yet doomed, i think, but, i fear, starting to founder.
