How are you keeping up with this? I found it so extremely hard to read?

It is incredibly dry in places, but it helps to watch videos on the odd key events in the book on youtube. Tolkien seems to go from world/family tree building (boring and characters you don't care about) to captivating scenes (Glaurung Vs Gondolin) in every chapter. It's not easy, but when those scenes come along, I want to read more.
