just something that keeps coming to mind - measuring all these events and stages in our species' development in millennia when we describe the last several millennia in years, decades, and centuries. it probably comes from gaps in details, but it's still shocking. how much could we gain in understanding our time and current decision-making by understanding those earlier years in closer detail? would we gain?

tbh I'm feeling a little meta rn - I'd say in a good way bc the ideas, hypotheses, conjectures, and conclusions tend to test the invisible bricks that construct reality that were laid by other hands. intellectual jenga, perhaps.

people have different feelings about chapter 3 (re: who wore it better, us or our pre-agricultural ancestors?); Harari presumably has his own preference. however, the chapter seems mostly to incite questions like: by what measure should we evaluate our species' legacy? what are the costs of our achievements? what is the cost of stasis? what does progress look like? how should we prioritize our next steps?
