A disturbing book... Of course it's fiction, of course it doesn't happen like this in the real world.... I hope. My guess is the author either researched the facts very thoroughly or talked extensively with someone in the intelligence business. On the other hand, village life, people and the country itself are so vividly described that's it's hard to imagine the author wasn't there once himself.
