The Diamond Lens by Fitz-James O'Brien.

A Sci-Fi, horror with a couple of fantasy twists. A microscope fanatic uses Supernatural means to improve the standard microscope lens to see beyond atoms. Murder most foul, and a fantastical ending ensues.

The Age of Science by Frances Power Cobbe

Written in 1877 technology allows a Newspaper to be sent back from 1977. Science has taken over from Religion, Conscience, and Honour. And a very dystopian society is presented where women are no longer allowed to be educated and it compulsory for boys to attend Science classes from the age of 2. Weird world - but amazing social commentary - Five Star!

The New Frankenstein by William Mc Ginn - 1837.
The protagonist reads Mary Shelly's Frankenstein as nonfiction and decides to improve upon Frankenstein's creation by giving his own resurrected being far better brain chemistry. He does this by collecting specific gases from the brains of famous people of the Era. Shelly and Goethe were two I was familiar with. I think the end was a cheat even in 1837? 3 *
