This is a good first book in R, serving both as a tutorial as well as a starting reference. Learning and using R is not for the faint of heart, and writing a book that is somewhere between a cursory overview and a detailed work that gets too deep in the weeds too quickly, is difficult. It's not perfect, but given the difficulty of writing a manageable and useful book, Jared Lander has done a fine job.
