The conflict in Clockwork is Character vs. Self. Herr is trying to overcome depression. Depression are thoughts or memories inside your head so only can beat it/overcome it.

The protagonist is Herr Ringelmann is battling sadness, the antagonist. I know this because Fritz, states, “Ive never seen the lad so gloomy before.” Herr continues to drink and change the subject after the topic comes up.
