Just read Savarkar's Hindutva definition. No doubt in my head now. Hindu Nationalism is "upper-caste racism". Gyanendra Pandey even called it so.

Bettie Upper-caste racism - yes I saw a documentary about the activist elitism inherent in the party.

The Right might come to power in India in 2014 elections. It could get really bad :(

Tanuj Solanki Also important how this book demystifies known heroes like Madan Mohan Malviya and Lala Lajpat Rai, by producing their own essays and speeches, and spicing it with facts. Apparently, MMM would not accept food served by anyone different from his caste (he was a Brahmin). Lala Lajpat Rai's argument against untouchability was only that all castes that are not untouchable across India be exempted from the practice, and only those who are untouchables everywhere be considered so.

These were among the founding fathers of Hindu political identity.

Tanuj Solanki @Garima: Tie it in with what I said elsewhere about Hindi being a political language before having any worthwhile literature.

Garima Wow! Ordered this book. Some myths are waiting to be busted.

Tie it in with what I said elsewhere about Hindi being a political language before having any worthwhile literature.

You've given me enough food for thought with this comment. Some discussions are in order with some of my family members. Thanks!
