this one hits all the big ones within the first quarter: racism, transphobia, sexism. but it’s all coming from the author; nothing is examined critically. the desert-dwellers are backwards; if you’re born a certain gender, that’s you forever; Alanna shuts down any conversation before it has a chance to go anywhere interesting, etc. we can’t blame it on this being a book for children. others are deftly written
