"I feel like I'm supposed to say something smart now. Something wise. Like how it's all for the best or how it'll be okay, but those things aren't smart or wise. They're just things to say."

"Does this feel like home?" Cal asks.

"Yeah, it does." My fingers play with her hair and make little circles on the top of her shoulder.

"Which part the most?" she says. "The water? The pier? The gritty hot dogs?"

"No," I say. "This. You right here, with me, beside me. That feels like home."

"Then I feel his hand brush against mine and suddenly we're holding hands. Forget writing and tying my shoes and flipping ribs and pulling my hair back in a ponytail. Forget all of the things that I thought my hands were for before. It's almost like after today if I look at my hands, I am going to wonder why it looks so bare, so empty."

"I think you want to be beautiful in someone's eyes, you want to be seen. Life if I shot off fireworks and no one was there to watch them, and I closed my eyes. They become beautiful in being seen, and maybe you're not supposed to think of people that way, but I do. You don't have to be beautiful to be seen, you just have to be seen as beautiful, by someone, by one person."
