Shocked by the change of laws around 1830 to limit the education, assembly and ability to travel of Negroes. Northern states could be as bad to their blacks who were free, limiting schools, burning down colleges , imprisoning white teachers who taught black students or let colored students attend. Salve states were worse of course.

Despite laws trying to stop the education of Negroes how to read and write, people continued to teach them and the laws were mainly to keep Northerners out, not interfere with masters decisions on how to treat their slaves. Slaves continued to learn how to read and write.

fascinating read about the debate between white groups to education of blacks both slave and free before 1861. Went through several stages.
