The lovely virgin's soul was never wrong,
and she knew all about herself,
and she knew even more about others,
and about the sea.
Her eyes were blueberries, her lips raspberries,
her hands wax.
She danced for the autumn on yellowed carpets,
she crouched and she whirled and she fell,
and was gone.

I have nothing left of myself but my black hair,
my two long braids that slither like snakes.
My lips have turned to glowing coals,
I no longer remember when they started to burn. . .
Fearful was the great fire that turned my youth to ashes.
Oh, the inevitable shall fall like a sword-stroke,
I leave without farewell and unnoticed,
I leave for good and never will return.

You looked for a flower
and found a fruit.
You looked for a well
and found a sea.
You looked for a woman
and found a soul.
I disappoint you.
