I remember someone asking Guy Lewis about Anton, and Guy told him that the rumor was that Anton had died of an overdose of meatloaf. Horrible death. The victim writhes on the floor, a powerful smell of onion coming from his orifices. Guy's questioner was not amused. Perhaps he owned a hot dog stand and truly missed him.

Guy, at this time was writing a severe, yet elegant prose, and was attempting to get at a specific thing in his work that nobody else was attempting. A friend of mine described it as pushing reality so hard that it fell over on its back and became kind of fantasy. Of course the editor didn't see it. Maybe he read the book on a couple of vodka martinis.
